Scam-free scampi!
Pär Svärdson, the entrepreneur who founded both Adlibris and Apotea, is investing in a sustainable fish-farming technology resulting from research at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). The first large-scale Swedish cultivation is being established at Östersjöfabriken in Västervik.
Over the past 10 years Prof. Anders Kiessling of the Department of Animal Nutrition and Management and Sergio Zimmermann, an industry expert from Brazil, have developed a land-based aquaculture technology. The technology has been thoroughly verified through long research, and has been tested at facilities in South America and Africa.
For several years SLU Holding has collaborated as part of the project, and has provided support in the form of funding for technical and commercial verification to validate the technology and secure patents around the invention. Kiessling and colleagues have now developed a variant of the technology which can work in "colder" climates and which will then open up sales of the technology on markets such as the EU, the US and China. The excellent results around sustainability, finance and product quality became the basis for Cresponix AB, which the researchers started with the entrepreneur Mattias Djurstedt.
"Production can now really get moving, after much work and preparation. We have appropriate premises, and support from our investors. It seems we've found the fourth player for our dream team for success. With Pär Svärdson on board, myself – the young entrepreneur, the researcher and the industry expert, we have a dream team for success,” says Mattias Djurstedt, Cresponix’s CEO. “We’ve also recruited a world expert in fry hatching from Brazil, who will be joining us in the autumn.”
“It feels great to be involved in taking this project to the next level. When we founded Östersjöfabriken I had a vision, and it feels great to be able to take it further and invest in such a sound concept as that of the Cresponix team,” says Pär Svärdson.
Fish and seafood farming is the world's fastest-growing food industry. In the patented technology from SLU, Cresponix have found a solution to many of the problems that used to constitute challenges for the industry. The technology's high-tech cycle solves challenges around feed, waste management, production costs and prawn health. It also avoids the current long shipments for scampi products – a factor conscious consumers will appreciate.

About Östersjöfabriken
On the quay in Västervik is a property where Sweden Pelagic used to have a facility for herring and sprat for animal consumption, but owing to reduced demand they decided to stop production and sell the factory. Through collaboration between Ecopelag and Västkustfisk SVC, business can continue on a smaller scale. The cooperation facilitates handling of several products from the Baltic Sea, provided the environment is promoted.
